Kenya's Anti-Doping Fight Improving Ahead of 2029 World Championships
At a press conference in Nairobi, Kenya, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said Kenya's anti-doping fight has made progress, but much work remains. The comment is significant as part of preparations for the 2029 World Championships, which will be held in an African city for the first time.
Coe said more than 140 Kenyan athletes have been sanctioned since the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) was founded in 2026. The figure highlights the depth of Kenya's doping problem. However, he claimed the situation is improving.
"We have made progress in some areas, and we are behind in others," Coe said. "But we have come a long way. It is a long journey."
Coe added, "We are now conducting more intense, more extensive, and more intelligence-led testing. If you want to catch fish, you have to go fishing."
He acknowledged that doping can never be completely eradicated. "It will never be a perfect world," he said. "But we are trying our best."
Kenya is one of the world's most successful nations in middle and long-distance running. Kenya's dominance in the 5,000m, 10,000m, steeplechase, and marathon spans decades. However, the shadow of doping is intertwined with this success.
The 2029 World Championships will be held in Nairobi. Kenya previously successfully hosted the 2026 World U18 Championships and the 2026 World U20 Championships. Nairobi lost its bid for the 2026 World Championships to Tokyo.
Coe said, "Being awarded the 2029 World Championships is a great opportunity for Kenya. It will bring more focus to the anti-doping fight."
Analysts say the 140+ sanction figure identifies Kenya's doping problem as systemic. An average of 17-18 Kenyan athletes have been sanctioned per year since 2026, which is disproportionately high relative to Kenya's share of global distance-running participation.
However, the news report lacks information on the annual sanction rate. Only a cumulative figure is given, making it impossible to tell whether the situation is improving. Independent evidence is needed to support Coe's "progress" claim.
The AIU was established in 2026. It is one of the flagship reforms of Coe's presidency. However, critics say the reformer himself is using the AIU's data as proof of his reform's success, which is a self-validating loop.
Kenya's doping problem is mainly concentrated in endurance disciplines. Blood manipulation and EPO-class substances have historically been more prevalent in this category.
The 2029 World Championships create a time-bound challenge for Kenya. If the sanction rate does not fall significantly by then, the "progress" narrative will not hold.
For World Athletics, this is a market-expansion move. There is potential for commercial and broadcast value growth in the new African market. However, the doping narrative could dampen sponsor enthusiasm.
Clean Kenyan athletes may face stigma. They face suspicion unrelated to their individual conduct.
Overall, the 2029 World Championships are both an opportunity and a challenge for Kenya. The pace of progress must be maintained, or the host nation will face a credibility crisis.
