BCCI Independent Committee and Trials: Securing Arunachal Pradesh's Ranji Participation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently constituted an independent selection committee after the Arunachal Pradesh Cricket Association forfeited multiple matches across three squads—the senior men's Ranji Trophy, the Under-19 men's Vinoo Mankad Trophy, and the Under-19 women's T20 Trophy—due to internal factionalism and legal complications. The committee's primary mandate is to conduct trials for players across age groups and senior levels to prevent further forfeitures and ensure that players are not deprived of their cricketing development opportunities. It is learned that a long-standing dispute between two factions of the Arunachal Cricket Association is pending before the Itanagar Bench of the Guwahati High Court. Due to this legal entanglement, the association has been unable to properly constitute selection committees, file team entries, and has become administratively paralysed. Consequently, Arunachal's opening Ranji Trophy fixture against Nagaland, scheduled at a neutral venue in Ahmedabad, was forfeited. Similarly, their matches in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and the Under-19 Women's T20 Trophy were also forfeited. The forfeiture across three different formats and age-group squads indicates that the problem is systemic to the association rather than confined to a single team. The BCCI's intervention is widely viewed as a move to protect its cricket expansion project in the North-East. Arunachal Pradesh is an emerging cricket region in India's North-East, where the BCCI has been providing opportunities to participate in domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy. However, the association's internal strife has undermined that opportunity. The BCCI has therefore set up an independent committee to temporarily run the selection process. The committee includes former first-class cricketers from Assam, who are experienced and proven in North-East cricket. The committee's head, a former first-class cricketer, has stated that players' interests are their primary consideration. They will ensure that players do not suffer in any way. He also made it clear that the committee will not be influenced by any outside party. It is an independent and professional selection process that will form teams solely on merit and player performance. The independent committee will conduct trials not only for the senior men's team but also for the women's team, Under-19 boys, and girls—all levels. This suggests an effort to rebuild Arunachal's cricket infrastructure anew. Since no specific player names have emerged publicly, it is clear that the focus here is on overall development rather than individual star players. However, many experts consider this solution temporary. The root problem—the ongoing legal dispute between two association factions—remains unresolved. Based on the Guwahati High Court's verdict, this arrangement could be invalidated in the future. If the court rules in favour of one faction, the BCCI may have to re-recognise that faction, and the current committee could be dissolved. Moreover, the appointment of former Assam players as selectors could be perceived locally as outside interference, even though the BCCI has clearly stated there will be no outside influence. Such apprehensions persist due to the limited cricket infrastructure in the North-East. The commercial motive behind the BCCI's move is limited. The Ranji Trophy is a domestic first-class competition whose broadcast value is much lower than the IPL. Arunachal Pradesh is a small, low-revenue North-Eastern state. So this is primarily a strategic and representational decision. The BCCI wants cricket's presence in the North-East to be sustained in the long term and talent to emerge from there. The biggest risk in this episode is that matches could be forfeited again if the court's ruling goes against the BCCI's arrangement. Furthermore, if three squads fail to play competitive matches in a single season, the development of young players in that region could be set back by an entire season. The BCCI's committee is treating the symptoms of the problem, not the root cause. Nevertheless, the BCCI's move is seen as positive, as they have agreed to bear administrative costs to keep a member unit operational. Their messaging, prioritising players' interests, will help reduce public pressure. If the trial process becomes permanent in the future and a locally constituted selection committee is formed, the North-East cricket pipeline will be strengthened. All things considered, this is an administrative and talent-development story, not one of match results. The BCCI's intervention has saved Arunachal Pradesh's cricket in the immediate term, but a long-term solution requires resolving the association's dispute and building local leadership. Learning from this crisis, other state cricket bodies in India should also strengthen their internal governance so that players do not become victims of administrative failure.
